| | | Duke of Burgundy I was thrilled earlier today to see my first ever Duke of Burgundy butterfly. I missed them at this site last year as I went too late in the season, another site where they have been recorded I have walked for 2 years now but have never seen them there so was determined to see them this year I counted 6 in all.
There were also quite a number of Dingy Skippers
Plus all the Orange Tips, Peacocks and Brimstones - Fantastic |

| | | Re: Duke of Burgundy Hi Cheryl
Glad to see that you have had Duke of Burgundy. Thanks for letting us know that they are out. This is useful, particularily as there are a few sites where their exact status is unclear.I'll check these out soon,it maybe that people are looking too late.
Cheers Jason |

| | | Re: Duke of Burgundy Jason,
I was there 2 days ago - nothing; but today was a different story.
I noticed on the Hampshire Wildlife Trust website that one had been sighted on April 9th! |

| | | Re: Duke of Burgundy I read an article recently that said 2009 had been the worst year ever for DoB. Is this true - and does 2010 look like it might be any better? |

| | | Re: Duke of Burgundy The British Wildlife butterfly report by Nick Bowles said it was the worst ever for Duke of Burgundy (and also for High Brown + Pearl-bordered Fritillaries). These reports are compiled from transect data obtained by Butterfly Conservation from dedicated transect surveyors so are the most comprehensive data available, so I would accept this sad fact.
Duke of Burgundy is one of the few UK butterflies I've not seen. |

| | | Re: Duke of Burgundy The last couple of years at the Lancs site have been very poor for them too. High browns still seem to be doing alright up here though.

Regards, Chris | Low, Chris whilst I was there on Thursday. Got there at 1300 and left at 1500 and saw two around the edge of the car park near the workshop and piles of stakes. There were about 10-12 people hanging around the barrier taped glades who were not seeing much at all. I was on the phone at the side of my van when I saw the first and about to leave! The warden was saying that numbers were down at the moment, possibly the cooler northerly winds delaying hatching? |
