| | | Re: Autumn Butterflies Red Admiral is exceptional though as it over-winters as an adult, and will emerge to feed on any warm day all through the winter. It's been recorded on both the 31st december and 1st Jan making it both the latest and earliest butterfly in the UK.
The continued sightings of Painted Ladies, small copper, tortoishell and clouded yellow this late in the season is exceptional though (and silver Y moth reported Monday). And the migrant hawkers are lasting longer as well. Common darters do last usually into mid-november, but there's a record from 1st december from cornwall I believe.
This is probably related to air temperature. Although there's been ground frost, the lowest air temperature here in Norfolk has been 4C I think - and even that hasn't lasted. What will probably do for the butterflies in the end will be the lack of flowers to feed from. Perhaps we shouuld be encouraging people to feed the butterflies with suger solution this winter? |
