No pictures unfortunately but Yesterday morning I saw a very bright but about half normal size Comma. Is it normal to see them about this late in the year? |

Morning Mike,
Yes, it is I believe. I've seen one inn January/February before - they over-winter as adults. Maybe it was smaller to give it a smaller surface area so it doesn't take so long to warm-through because the daytime temperature is lower now? Just a thought.

We had one sunning itself on the wall the other day too - it was smaller than usual as well; there has also been a Red Admiral flying around.

I saw some sort of butterfly yesterday in my garden. It was too far away to identify, but I did think "wow, that's late!" And there are some very big bumble bees still around

Yep, I had one at the beginning of the week. It isn't uncommon for species that overwinter as adults to be seen on warm days.  |

Comma and red admiral still on the wing here on sunny days too.
Undersized butterflies can sometimes be the result of the caterpillar running short on food and pupating early. |

There was a Peacock sluggishly exploring the garden today. It has rained heavily here and is windy but feels very mild for the time of year. I wonder if the mild weather made it active? |
