| | | Re: Attracting Brimstone Butterflies I checked the Postcode Plants Database, and both species are native to this area:
This suggests that the Common Buckthorn has a greater wildlife value, but I think that the database may be incomplete

| | | Update In the end I bought what I thought was Common Buckthorn from a place that delivers reliably. The leaves now look like Alder Buckthorn, and I bought 3 plants because of the male/female issue too!
Sure enough, they wilted in the spot I'm growing them in, in this dry weather. But to be fair to the plants, it really is like a desert. However, I try to chose plant so I don't have to water, so I might just let nature decide next year. No berries yet, may be that they are too stressed, or too young.
Something's eating them though. A moth I think, so I may not get Brimstones, but I'm happy they are providing caterpillars.
The forum will be the second to hear about it if I ever get Brimstones in the future. The first will be the neighbours as I shout for joy.
