| | | butterfly ( and possibly moth ) book I'll probably get slated for this question as it must have been asked time and time again - sorry but I don't know how to search for previous topics. So, what's the best book for ID then!!!!!

| | | Re: butterfly ( and possibly moth ) book For UK only, I'd recommend:
Pocket Guide to Butterflies of GB + Ireland- Richard Lewington
Companion volume: Field Guide to Moths of GB + Ireland- Waring/Townsend/ Lewington (also available as concise form with less info)
These are both published by British Wildlife Publishing
Covering butterflies/moths + some caterpillars a fine photographic guide:
British Moths + Butterflies by Chris Manley
Beautiful photos, but info limited, published by AC Black |

Thanks for the recommendations. I notice that Collins do a butterfly guide ( and as their bird guide is so good ) I wonder what your views are on it?
Thanks again,

Thanks again,
Bob P. | The Collins guides are good but cover Europe too. The UK book I recommend has more info with eggs, caterpillar, pupa + adults illustrated, distribution maps + life history charts. Maybe buy both. When in the UK it's good to have a guide boook without all the species you're not likely to see here. |
