| | Need Some Advice Hi all
I have a small problem, we have had loads of White butterflies in our vegetable patch in the back garden for weeks now, mostly Large Whites. I'm quite happy to have them around even though I have actually shaken my finger at a few and told them 'Don't be laying eggs in my Kale!!', then laughed knowing full well that's exactly what they are going to do..lol.
But now I have a tiny problem, as predicted I found a Large white today in a small trance on some few week old radish plants, I was thrilled, grabbed the camera with Macro lens and took some shots. Of course I knew what she was doing and although the opportunity to get some photos of her laying eggs and the eggs later when she finished was nice, now what do I do?
These radishes will be ready in a few weeks, germination for the eggs I've read is a few weeks, the top of the radish plants (with the eggs) goes into the compost bin after we harvest. Not to mention I'm not entirely sure I want to share my kale, and radishes and other veggies with the caterpillars!! One or two sure but 40-60?!? Not really.
I know some folks would love to have the eggs, and would be great at keeping them until next spring but that's not an option for me.
I can't in good conscience discard these eggs, and I'm not sure where to 'take' them nearby that would offer a good food source, like parks or reserves etc.
And I know what you're thinking, there are probably hundreds or thousands of other little eggs in the garden already but I looked can't find any obvious places and there for don't feel bad about all of them yet.
What would yall do?
Thanks for any advice

| | | Re: Need Some Advice Any nasturtiums nearby? They make a very acceptable alternative to brassicas for large whites. And interestingly I've found the nasturtiums cope very well with them: last year they completely denuded mine - not a leaf left. And yet as soon as the caterpillars pupated the nasturtiums just produced more leaves and carried on flowering. |

| | | Re: Need Some Advice Wow those are some gorgeous plants/flowers I wish I did have some around, but sadly no. I was hoping for a more 'wildish' type of plant that might be suitable, I can find in the wild and take them too. I'll consider getting some of those planted for next year, they really are lovely.
I have pansies, violas, inpatients, california poppies and cornflower growing, of course as I mentioned I'm also not really excited about them denuding anything in the garden I've worked so hard to keep up..lol
Thanks Harasseddad for the information
Any other ideas about? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
