| | | Re: Butterfly invation. The weather has been quite good for a few days up here, I don't get many Butterflies in the garden until the Buddleia is out, but I see a fair few when I'm out and about.
The odd thing is that in the last couple of days, Small Tortoiseshells keep finding their way into the house, I often sit with the door open in summer. I've had to net a few today and then release them outside. |

| | | Re: Butterfly invation. up until today, apart from the odd white butterfly we have had no butterflys in the garden at all,
today there are lots of painted ladies, which we have never seen in the garden before, peacock, comma, two or three other brown species, and lots of large whites, and a small blue one
the buddleas that they were feeding on have been in flower for quite sometime now, so its not the sudden flowering of those that has attracted them,
we have a shed hidden away at the top of the garden, that is very rarely used, today i had occasion to go in for something, and found several peacocks and small tortoiseshells fluttering against the glass window, they must have got in as catterpillars and pupated , emerging in the shed, but could not find a way out,
with a bit of gentle persuasion all regained the outdoors unscathed

| | | Re: Butterfly invation. It's been a pretty grey day around London until I got home late afternoon when the sun came out.
Then after seeing only a single Small White through the day the garden was alive with dozens of Large Whites, often on buddlejas + Verbena bonariensis; also a Small White, 3 Painted Ladies, a tatty Comma, a Gatekeeper + Speckled Wood.
It's been many years since I've seen the numbers of Large Whites that I've seen this summer. As I'm not a Brassica grower, they are very welcome! |
