| | | Butterflies and teazels - or vice versa We were walking today alongside a ditch feeding the River Great Ouse at Fen Drayton. The ditch bank was covered in teazels just coming into bloom with that delicate pale mauve colour that made my camera twitch.
My guv'nor pointed out all the butterflies and other insects feeding on the flower heads.
Here are some snaps. It wasn't until I processed them that I realised the wealth of detail in some of the shots, and the range of activity taking place. I was really chuffed - down to nature and not to me
I think that the hoverflies are Episyrphus balteatus (I seem to remember someone calling this the Marmalade Fly but I might be wrong). No idea of the black things.
Next up were Painted Ladies
Finally, a combined operation
I was constantly reminded of the illustrations of fairies in old story books - aaah - must be my new granddaughter making me soft!

I forgot to mention that I took these using my 100-400 Canon lens handheld. I did have my Sigma 150 with me but it was too breezy to use it.

| | | Re: Butterflies and teazels - or vice versa I've tried more than once to grow teasels from seed on account of their appeal to butterflies, but they never germinate!

Regards, Chris | That's bad luck Chris. My teasels appeared in my garden from nowhere about three years back. Had no idea what they were at first as we have been here 20 odd years and not a teasel in sight! Now they are popping up all over the place.
Colin, beautiful shots there...thanks for sharing
