I was in a canopy hide way up in the tops of oak trees photographing purple emperors and purple hairstreaks when I spotted this butterfly which I cannot identify.
Can anyone please help? |

That looks like a Grayling to me Brian.

It looks like a Grayling to me, seems a strange place to see one! Or maybe that's just me - I've only ever seen them on rocky shores and coastal grasslands!  Or maybe it's not a Grayling! |

I photographed one in the same place Brian, Yesterday see my thread under Wildlife Photography including Purple Hairstreak, White Admiral and Purple Emperor, Yes Purple Emperor, first time at Minsmere since 1959!!

Grayling for me too + a species common at Minsmere- often see them on the Buddleja by the loo block! |

My wife Margaret the Novice , whom you have met, also photographed the purple emperor but alas with her 100 x 400mm lens the insect was too far off to get a decent photograph.
Missed the white admiral but there it's a challenge for another day!!!
Your kit I am sure did the job. Well done.

Many thanks Brian, Regards to Head office, : ) I too was in a churchyard today photographing butterflies, Your Silver Studdied Blues are lovely, I managed to get a Clouded Yellow today my first ever, dont know if you have still got my email address, email me I'll let you know where they are.
