| | | Skipper Confusion. Skippers confuse me, so can some one please help with these ? Because, to my eye's, Small Skippers look the same size as Large ones. (Or do I need to go back to SpecSavers ? ).

| | | Re: Skipper Confusion. Well I will bet I'm wrong Ben but I would say 1, 2, 3, 4, Small Skippers 5 and 6 Large Skippers 7 and 8 Small.
Best wait until someone who really knows for sure can tell you |

| | | Re: Skipper Confusion. I'm not brilliant on skippers but I'll have a go.
1) Male Small Skipper I think (think I can see brown tips to the antennae
2) Female Small Skipper
3) Female Small Skipper
4) Female Small Skipper
5) Male Small Skipper
6) This ones a male Large Skipper, it has hooked antennae and is more "patterned" than the Small and Essex skippers if that makes sense?
7) Female Small Skipper
8) Female Small Skipper
I might have got some of the sexes wrong and their might be an Essex in there somewhere but I really wouldn't be able to tell, best wait for confirmation.

| | | Re: Skipper Confusion. Hi you will probably laugh at me giving help on this subject as I am probably the worst insect/butterfly ID person but I have been having the same problem and found this site today which says quote:-
'The presence of a faint chequered pattern on both sides of the wings distinguishes this species from the similar Small and Essex Skippers, which fly at the same time.' Butterfly Conservation - Hampshire and Isle of Wight Branch
It is good for ID the different species so I will keep it as a fav
Hope this helps

| | | Re: Skipper Confusion. 6 is definitely a large Skipper, I would say all the rest are Small Skippers, I go by
a) size
b) hooked antennae on Large (though not easily visible in the field)
c) black line across forewings on Large |

| | | Re: Skipper Confusion. I'd agree with James on all but no 8 - I think it's a male small as I think you can see the sex brand showing through the wing. But it's tentative, and it could be female.
The quick way of ID'ing in the field is that large skippers are "dirtier", while small/essex are a cleaner, plain orange. For seperating small and essex I go for the tips of the antennae being shiny black in essex and dull in small. Helps when you need a quick decision on a transect. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
