For Butterflies I use "Britain's Butterflies by David Tomlinson and Rob Still, it's part of the "Wild Guides" range. I like it because it has clearly labelled male and female forms and a section with pictures on eggs, caterpillars and chrysali.

For Moths I use the "Field Guide To The Moths of Great Britain and Ireland" by Waring, Townsend and Lewington. I also use the concise guide in the field.

Butterflies of Europe by Tristan Lafranchis is, in my opinion the best identification guide currently available for European butterflies. It is privately published and available from the author via Amazon. The book has a clear and easy to use key, and is illsutrated with beautiful annotated photos which highlight the key features to look out for when trying to tell look-a-alike species apart.
