Swallowtails are out

Just to let folk know that the first Swallowtails of the season were seen yesterday - beating last year's first date by 5 days! Three were seen by Horning Church.

That's great news, does anyone know if there were any Swallowtails seen today at Strumpshaw's Butterfly day?

Thats a very early start for them this year, we found and photographed them on the last weekend in May last year at Strumpshaw and we thought that was pretty early!!

I visited Strumpshaw on Saturday - no Swallowtails for me

But I had a lovely chat with the guy in 'the big house' - I will be returning.

Unlucky, On the Sunday one of my recorders reports "We saw three
Swallowtails (one by the reception and two on the wide sand track running up to the river). " And of course they had the huge painted Lady Migration - over 800 an hour passing through at Strumpshaw apparently.

The influx of painted Ladies has been nothing short of phenominal, there has been 100's passing through here in the last two days.
Its quite cloudy and damp here this morning and I still saw over 30 whilst taking the dog for a walk !

Sightings reported from Strumpshaw, How Hill, Cockshoot broad and upton fen. All but strumpshaw have been singles, strumpshaw has had up to three - but they're not out in any numbers, and people have had to try several sites to get a sighting. Having said that weather looks good for saturday.
