| | | Re: Brown Argus Hi Duncan
They are very nice small Butterflys and I was lucky enough to see one this week in Bedfordshire. In my case I didn't find it it settled on a plant (Star of Bethelem) I was taking a picture of. When I posted the picture Nick Cantle raised a good point of how you differentiate the Argus from a female common Blue, am I right in thinking the female Blue lacks a dark spot on the topside of its wings?

| | | Re: Brown Argus Yes - that's true.
In addition, there is *no blue* on a Brown Argus! Most female Common Blues have a smattering of blue scales toward the thorax (at least!).

| | | Re: Brown Argus I'm getting mixed messages here
So if there is no blue at all on a Brown Argus, how come these are both apparently said species yet they have a steel blue coating near the thorax?
Me being silly?

| | | Re: Brown Argus Sorry - yes, there is a bluish tinge to the hairs on the thorax. I should have been clearer - I meant there are no blue scales.
