| | | Re: Painted Ladies Have seen them the past two weekends, last Sunday at Slapton Sands, South Devon and yesterday on the cliffs between Tintagel and Trebarwith Strand, North Cornwall. Also saw some Small Heaths and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries at Tintagel, Common Blues and Peacock butterflies at Slapton Sands. Think I have already had a better butterfly year than the whole of last year! Hope it carries on. |

| | | Re: Painted Ladies Had 30+ in my back garden today in Poole, Dorset and been non stop all day feeding on a Firethorn bush that I have in full bloom. Came on here to see if anyone else had the same and looks like you have.

They were just about on every conceiveable surface in my garden; nectaring on flowers, sitting on gravel, sitting on the fence, sitting on the shrubs, spiralling up into the sky in dogfights. I've never seen anything like it before. I do flattery myself that the reason they dropped in rather than pass over was because I have butterfly friendly nectar plants for them to feed on. | Thanks Susie, I've just had a mooch at that sight - it looks good! I think I might join the forum .

| | | Re: Painted Ladies On a visit to the south coast yesterday, we were lucky enough to see hundreds of Painted Lady butterflies making their way northwards. This was east of Hastings along the Fire Hills and inland (even through the thunderstorms), some in groups of about 8 or so crossing fields and roads, even along the M20.
My Mum had one in her garden yesterday. Hopefully they will turn up here in N.Kent and deeper into the country.

My Mum had one in her garden yesterday. Hopefully they will turn up here in N.Kent and deeper into the country. | There were large numbers at Sissinghurst on Sunday and many flying through, so Sunday was a good day in Kent to see them. Maybe another flush of them will come your way over the next few days - trouble is, I think the wind direction has changed a bit since the weekend so that may have shifted them slightly (only guessing at that though).
Some currently seen at Worthing so they are still coming over by the sounds of it.

I am glad to say that the painted lady-fest is still continuing. Everywhere I go I see they flying overhead and when I came home this afternoon the garden was once again full of them. I've probably seen a couple of hundred during the course of today. |

I was looking for Heliotrope because they seem to love that, but they didn't have any in. This particular garden center is more of an over-priced garden furnishing store now anyway so I'll go to the one closer to home which seems to have a much wider range of plants.
