they have arrived on the south coast in number,

i saw a couple the other day and my neighbour was in the forest today and reported seeing 10+ in a short time.

Haven't seen one yet - gotta be here soon though! I do hope this bodes well for lepidopteran migrants this year () after 2008 being so poor.

Alerted by the number of reports of PL's coming in, I just checked the car park where I work(Basingstoke,Hants) and counted 7 of them!

there everywhere in crawley today, 17 on one cotoneaster bush plus several flying around. On a short walk at midday i saw around 30 painted ladies and around 20 speckled woods, 1 peacock and 6 small blues.

I've seen my first ones today. They're like buses - you wait ages for one, and the five come along at once!

I counted 13 today in the space of a hundred metres or so on a track going through a field of rape...

On my walk today they were by far the most common butterfly

Yes, today was a day to watch visible migration of insects. Painted Ladies have been streaming though all day- most just heading NW, though there were 2 feeding up in my garden this evening on Dame's Violet + Erysimum "Bowle's Mauve".

Wherever I went today there they were en route to who knows where- in the park, across meadows + even along the high street. Must have seen at least 60 today + if I'd stayed looking, I'm sure many more.

Given I've only seen 1 in each of the last 2 years in the UK (seen plenty elsewhere) it's grea to see so many. Hopefully some other species will come in too- any mothers catching some obvious migrants at the moment?

Does anyone have photographs of the migration this weekend? People are talking about the numbers they've seen this weekend on the Springwatch message board and it sounds lovely .
