| | | Brown hairstreak butterflies I am trying to find out as much as possible about brown hairstreak butterflies but there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of information around. Can anyone point me in the direction of some good resources?
Many thanks,
Susie |

This page has abit of info on them, it also has links to references which may also be useful.
You could also ask any question on WAB. |

| | | Re: Brown hairstreak butterflies My favourite book for info on UK butterflies is :
The Butterflies of Britain + Ireland by Jeremy Thomas/Richard Lewington DK (in asssociation with National Trust)
Out of print, but I'm sure available 2nd hand- superb plates + readable, informative text.
More academic is the Harley book in the Lepidoptera series that covers butterflies.
Any particular questions then I'm sure we on WAB will be able to assist! |

| | | Re: Brown hairstreak butterflies Thank you for the replies, dogghound, ron and aeshna.
I have no particular question, I am just trying to learn as much as I possibly can regarding this subject due to trying to preserve some brown hairstreak habitat.
Many thanks again. |

| | Re: Brown hairstreak butterflies I think the biggest threat to this species Susie is cutting back too hard of the Blackthorn hedges that are home to the eggs/larvae. If the species is present then it's important that it's not all cut back at the same time.
It does seem to be slowly increasing in some areas recently. I've only seen 1 wild specimen which was a pristine specimen that nicely posed at Porton Down, though have also seen an artificially raised specimen from Bookham Common where it has recently re-appeared (or rediscovered!). It must be the only butterfly that is easier to find as an egg than a butterfly! |

| | | Re: Brown hairstreak butterflies You have a very exciting project here Susie.
You should write a blog or something so we can follow the development of your miniature nature reserve.
Keep up the good work!
