| | | Are these butterflies too red? I photographed these butterflies - a Tortoise Shell and a Small Copper at Cocklawburn beach on the north east Scotland/England boreder and, when compared to illustrations and other photographs, they seem to be very red whereas they should be more orange, especially in the case of the Small Copper! Am I right in thinking they're a bit too red?
On another note, in the same area (a nature reserve too) I saw several flocks of a pale brown butterfly, I couldn't get a good look at it because when you tried to approach one they all took off and flew on, any idea what these were?
Thankya for your help!
Ps. sorry about the quality! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/KIF_3079.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...KIF_3056-1.jpg |

| | | Re: Are these butterflies too red? Are these as they came from the camera or have they been enhanced? Unfortunately there are no camera details to assist with knowing what if anything is wrong. You needed a faster speed for the Copper as the grass has obviously swayed in the wind taking the insect with it. Will leave it to the experts to hopefully have some ideas.

| | | Re: Are these butterflies too red? Looks about right at the moment, certainly for the Small Tortoiseshell. They will fade with age.
There has been a brood of Small Copper emerge on my local spot in the last few days and they are similarly seem a bit darker than usual, not quite as dark as in you picture but not far off it.
I guess it may because they are "new" or possibly diet or temperature related. I am shure somebody else will have the answer.
Brownish butterflies still on the go in my area (NE scotland) are Meadow Brown, Ringlet and Greyling, |

| | | Re: Are these butterflies too red? Im curious as to wether they looked red which is why you photographed them which would mean its butterfly related
or
when you looked at the pics they seemed red which would imply camera/film/equipment related?
were they this red in real life?

I was at the beach taking photographs as I've been inclined to do and happened to be photographing these. They were definatley that colour in real life, no enhancement or camera problems at all. The Tortoise Shell was quite lazy and wasn't afraid of me approaching close with my camera whereas the Small Copper was very timid and it took flight whenever I approached, hence the blurry image. The Copper was definatley black and scarlet red, not being a butterfly expert of any description I didn't think anything of it. But when it came to IDing them for my photo album I was surprised at the total difference in colouration, the only similarity with mine and the other Small Coppers and Tortoise Shells was the pattern.
It's definatley not the camera as I have High Brown Fritellarys and a Painted Lady who appear 'normal'. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
