Saw a small butterfly about 30mm wingspan, brown top side wings with a few (4, 5 or 6 on each wing) white spots (about 1 - 2mm diameter) near the edges.
In South wales
Possibly wing shape and colour (the brown) of the Brown Hairstreak
Any ideas?

and could not see it there - you click on the 5 pics of butterflies at the top of page and it opens up to show more from the same family. I already decided it wasn't speckled wood.

Speckled Woods have been very plentiful this year , not quite as plentiful as the whites though , they are everywhere  |

Speckled Wood does seem the obvious choice. Only other thing I can think of is a male Vapourer Moth which is day flying + brown, but only really 1 prominent white spot on each wing, so not really like your description. |

It was a ringlet. I remembered the white spots wrongly, probably confusing them with the underside. But definately was a ringlet. And OH has confirmed she saw it too.  Thanks |

Very late for a Ringlet they stopped flying a month ago in Essex, not sure about Wales though. | | | |
