Butterfly/Skipper ID's please

Hi Folks

I generally take pics of birds but if I see other interesting things take quick snaps. No doubt these pics are very common Butterfly/Skippers but not to me! What are they?

1: speckled wood
2: one of the 'whites' possibly a large white (i'd wait for someone that knows them better!)
3: Gatekeeper
4: Comma
5. Meadow brown I think

I would agree with that. I'm not sure on the white either. I can tell the large from small white if seen together but that doesn't help here.

I think the white may be a green-veined white based on how visible the veins are on the upper side of the wing

I'd agree with Green-veined White, again because of the visibility of the veins on the wings, also the black markings on the corner of the wings look more typical of a GVW than Large or Small Whites. Also agree with the other four.

You're right -it is! I believe it's a male.

Agree with all except 2 which is GV White. Gatekeeper is a female + Meadow Brown a male.

Thanks everyone - that's great! The white one was small - not as big as the one which I've always called the 'cabbage white'.

"Cabbage white" isn't strictly a species, but a gardener's term for 2 species- Small + Large Whites- which can attack Brassicas, though it's the latter species which is most damaging as it lays many eggs, so therefore more munching larvae!
