| | | 3 Grasshoppers, a butterfly and a hoverfly for ID Can anyone help with IDs for these?
#1 Butterfly, feeding on ragwort
#2 Grasshopper
#3 Grasshopper, possibly the same species as #2?
#4 Grasshopper
#5 I think this is a hoverfly, Eristalis something, but I can't work out which one.
Thanks

2 Meadow Grasshopper. The other 2 photos don't really show any useful ID features, but may well be this species too! |

| | | Re: 3 Grasshoppers, a butterfly and a hoverfly for ID which dronefly are you referring to? I understood that all Eristalis species were popularly known as droneflies, although this does seem to confuse some people who don't realise that they are syrphidae. |

#4 Has longer and thinner antennae than the other 2 grasshopper pics. Do the antennae vary much between specimens/age?
#5 My understanding is that most people refer to Eristalis species as Drone flies, but the actual Drone fly is only Eristalis tenax.
Using various websites I get the list of following differences between E tenax and E. pertinax, but whether this list is correct I don't know: - E. tenax - broader facial stripe between the eyes
- E. tenax - little or no yellow on the legs
- E. tenax - tibiae of the hind legs are dark
- E. pertinax - tibiae of the hind legs are distinctly bicoloured
- E. pertinax - entirely orange front tarsus
- E. pertinax - abdomen is tapering
- E. tenax - abdomen is more nearly cylindrical and "chunkier"
- E. tenax - double vertical stripes on the surface of the eyes
- E. pertinax - Eyes bare
My image seems to have orange/black on all legs, a cylindrical abdomen and hairy eyes (not sure about double vertical stripes though).
