From the shading of the veins on the upperwing I would say this is a Green veined white which is smaller than a large white.

| | | Re: Large white butterfly It puts up a good case for both - however, I think the body of the Green-veined White is darker so I too would go for Large white, though I can't be certain! |

| | | Re: Large white butterfly Thanks gentlemen.
The picture in Chinery is of the underside of the wings and doesn't help at all - which is why I went for the Large White.

| | | Re: Large white butterfly Given the appearance of highlit veins I would normally have gone for GVW but the body I think is way too dark for it, hence my ID of LW. |

| | | Re: Large white butterfly It could of course also be a small white. Distinguishing from the top is almost impossible without seeing the bottom of the hind wing because of the variety of black markings in both species. On balance I would go with the GVW. Sorry to complicate the issue.

However, the SW has only ONE black dot per wing (though I'm sure there's a more scientific word for it ) |

| | | Re: Large white butterfly I'm pretty sure it's a Green-veined White, as Lance says the obvious shaded veins showing through on the upperside look good for this species.

Guy | Agree totally on this. Definitely not a Large White, though whites can be confusing when you start out + in flight even for the experienced! |
