Large white butterfly

I think this is a large white butterfly - new to me?

From the shading of the veins on the upperwing I would say this is a Green veined white which is smaller than a large white.

It puts up a good case for both - however, I think the body of the Green-veined White is darker so I too would go for Large white, though I can't be certain!

The picture in Chinery is of the underside of the wings and doesn't help at all - which is why I went for the Large White.

Given the appearance of highlit veins I would normally have gone for GVW but the body I think is way too dark for it, hence my ID of LW.

It could of course also be a small white. Distinguishing from the top is almost impossible without seeing the bottom of the hind wing because of the variety of black markings in both species. On balance I would go with the GVW. Sorry to complicate the issue.

Lance, it makes it all the more interesting!

However, the SW has only ONE black dot per wing (though I'm sure there's a more scientific word for it )

I'm pretty sure it's a Green-veined White, as Lance says the obvious shaded veins showing through on the upperside look good for this species.

Agree totally on this. Definitely not a Large White, though whites can be confusing when you start out + in flight even for the experienced!
