Firstly dont feel silly...there are many "day flying moths" two of which...our Cinnebar and our Burnet moths both get mistaken for red butterflies all the time....(and in flight look all red..only at rest do you notice the black body as well as wing markings)
I recently at college had some fellow students telling me they had seen a "purple and black" butterfly...near the stream we were working....calls of "Purple hairstreak or Purple Emporor" were being shouted about to which i was having none....turned out when i spotted it and showed them to be a Banded Damoisel. (damsel fly like a "Dragon Fly") proving how easily mistakes are made without photographic or other evidence.
And also...can i point out...the original posts/thread are for a "pink" butterfly...barbie pink...
We have seemingly shifted to red along the way...im just scared when someone now takes a pic of a "yellow" butterfly everyone is going to go "YES at last...thats is IT!! " ? |

| | Re: pink butterfly?? Hi Dan,
I don't feel silly (although I am often accused of being silly but thats another story), it was only this year when I noticed the cinnebar moths flying around that I found out there are day flying moths, before that I thought that moths only fly at night. I love that there are still so many things I know nothing about and it makes life fun Quote:

I'm still reading all the posts to see if anyone has come up with a name.
Just want to confirm that when I saw the butterfly it was resting, I didn't really see it in flight but I can be 100% certain it was PINK not red, it was also quite small, my husband says it had a black body, it was lunchtime & I live in north Hampshire, so I now think I have covered everything I saw on that day
We WILL get to the bottom of this I'm sure, one day |

I know you would love one of these sightings from all over the country to be a rare visitor but surely most of these posts are just wind -ups. Seeing as most are new members, all joining within the same couple of weeks and with minimal posts all on the Pink butterfly thread and not a "hello"between them. I checked 7 of the people with sightings on the list and it was the same for all. I think we have to concede - we've been done!
I suppose it has kept us entertained and our minds active in the hope there is something special out there, flying from the North East to North West to Hampshire . |

| | | Re: pink butterfly?? I would like to point out (if someone hasn't already done so) that worn or pale specimens of burnets/cinnabars can appear bright pink, just to make things more complicated.
Cheers,

| | | Re: pink butterfly?? I can assure you that I am NOT a wind up. After I saw it I was so taken back by it's colour that I spent quite a while googling "pink butterfly" & this was the only website that came up with any info. It landed on my daughters wendyhouse for a minute, if that, & as I don't have any flowers in my garden I bet it wont come back again, I can say it was between 5 & 6pm as we had just come back from walking my dog. I didn't take too much noice of the body but my husband said it was black, I just remember it being quite small & bright pink. Sorry if I'm repeating myself but believe me I saw it. If anything it's made me more aware of butterfles now & will be showing them to my daughter as she grows up, I just wish I saw a few more interesting ones that the usual cabbage white (is that what it's called?) SO please stop saying this is a hoax as it gets me mad I really saw it, I do now take on board what Adam has said although that just means we may never find out what it is | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
