| | | Brimstone Butterfly Saw my first Brimstone of the year at Sandringham this afternoon. Does that mean we have seen the back of winter?

I'm still waiting to see my first butterfly of any species but will keep my eyes open this week now that the weathers finally picked up! |

| | | Re: Brimstone Butterfly I had two Brimstones on Saturday and my Mrs had one in the garden the same day as well.
One big surprise for me was coming across a bee that I'm sure was a Leaf Cutter Bee. I thought these flew a bit later in the year.
I tried to get a photo of it and managed one hurried shot as it flew off straight away and disappeared over a hedgerow.

| | | Re: Brimstone Butterfly Do you know I have not even seen a live frog or toad yet! I have been to the local ponds and not a single one! I would have expected to have seen them in February but her we are in March and still nothing. I have found two squashed ones at the end of the road however, I was going to scoop them up but didn't think they would be terribly photogenic! |

John | Hi John,
The bee in your photo is a red-tailed bumblebee Bombus lapidarius they are often the first bumblebees seen in the spring due to their size & the fact they tend to hibernate in areas that are easily warmed up by a bit of sun-this is also the reason why you see this species 'out & about' on warm days in the winter. |

I'm not into bees so do not know the names but at least I now know this one.
