Did some cross country today near Crewe Hall and recorded my first Painted Lady Butterfly of the year. Anyone seen any other arrivals?

Nice one bugbotherer! I also saw my first Painted Lady yesterday in my garden on the same flower as a male Orange-tip. It was a beautiful sight and both were firsts for the garden

I had my first Painted Lady of the year in the garden a couple of days ago. Didn't land for a second though!

Saw my first last week in my garden, where it stayed for 3 days, which seemed unusual for such a mobile species. My second sighting today was much more fleeting. |

I saw my first one this year when I was leading a wildlife walk on the 23rd May. There was another one in my garden last Friday but it flew off before I could get a photo. |

The ones I saw today were all very flighty, the one I posted which Graham has kindly added to this thread was the only photograph I managed out of many atempts. Is it possible that the ones I saw today have over wintered as they were all tatty looking specimens. I saw at least half a dozen different ones and some were even worse for wear than the one I posted.

Other reports of sightings of painted ladies this weekend that I'm aware of:
Carmarthenshire 20+ on sea shore
Northumberland "all along the coast"
West Norfolk coast 10+
So it seems likely we're seeing immigration. | | |
