| | | Re: Hunting I look forward to receiving my hand knitted jumper in time for Christmas. I hope your knitting skills are up to scratch, I don’t want one with loads of big holes in it.
BTW, shearing 2,000 Alpacas in between calving is really no excuse for absence. |

| | | Re: Hunting I'm not sure if this thread covers angling but there's something in today's paper that might be relevant. Dr Joseph Gardner of Purdue University, Indiana, in conjuction with other researchers, has done an experiment involving putting wired jackets onto goldfish and heating them to uncomfortable levels. Half the goldfish were anaesthetised, half not. Two hours later they found the unanaesthetised fish showed signs of fear and wariness, indicating they had suffered a bad experience and remembered it. Conclusion is that animals experience pain as we do; signs of distress (e.g. a fish wriggling on the end of a line) cannot be dismissed as merely reflex. |

| | | Re: Hunting Remember a few years back a "scientist" declared fish only have a three second memory ?,anyone who keeps fish could have told him how wrong he was,(in case anyone is as stupid as that particular "scientist",when you go near their aquarium they swim to the surface expecting to be fed, even if they hav'nt been fed for a day or two),I would have thought putting a wired jacket on a fish would cause stress anyway !."Scientists" ,don't you love them ?,I seriously wonder how some of them get their MA's,BA's Phd's or whatever, and yes I do know some, some are very clever, some could'nt find their own [i]whatever[i] without references and a detailed map, which they'd get someone else to read !. |

As far as i know the fact that animals experience pain is not at issue in this debate - which is why good hunters take care to ensure that shot is imediately lethal and does not maim the quarry - and also why it is not humane to allow populations of deer to expand to the point where they are dying of starvation (which is extremley painful) during the winter months.

| | | Re: Hunting After posting that fish bit I thought I'd better declare I'm not an opponent of hunting...although my townie sensibilities would never allow me to participate in it. What settled the matter for me was something I found on a walk some years ago. It was a lamb missing its head. It was in remote countryside - a long way from dog-walking territory - so I concluded it was the work of a fox. The things have to be controlled! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
