| | | Geocache puzzle help Any ideas with this at all? The numbers are meant to give coordinAtes in the form n53 //./// w002 //.///. I guessed it could be golden ratio

| | | Re: Geocache puzzle help Are you saying these are the actual degree values?
Can we say 1|18:24 represents 5 then, etc?
Whats that degxe doing, its not in the longitude one?
I think you've got the representation wrong. It looks like deg min sec and not deg min.min
I'm seeing dd mm ss N d mm ss W

Sorry the degxe was a typo on my Iphone
1|18:24 is equal to five and 2|2:2 is equal to three. Not sure how though |

| | | Re: Geocache puzzle help What's the hint? Does anyone give anything away in the log? Don't really know enough about math/logic/programming symbols to know where to start looking.
So, somehow 1|18:24 can make 5,
2|2:2 can make 3
and 6|2:23 can make 2?
And we need to figure out how to de-code the other terms... hmmm, tricky. |

| | | Re: Geocache puzzle help I kind of see what your getting at with the golden ration idea. I've been playing with the numbers for a bit in excel. The idea being we must be able to combine the first three numbers somehow, arithmetically (hopefully) or logically (hopefully not) to give the answer as a single digit.
We have 11 sets of data with 3 cribs (right answers) and 8 unknown answers.
Have you noticed how 31 appears twice? What's that in binary 00011111
Hex 1F
I wonder if that's a clue?
I kind of like the golden ratio idea because of the way the numbers look in a table when you combine them several different ways mathematically (+, -, etc) and the fact that each set of digits results in a single value between 0 and 9 inclusive.

| | | Re: Geocache puzzle help I would contact the owner of the cache and ask him/her to clarify things. It could well be a typo on the owner’s part. Personally I've never seen caches listed in this way, in all the time I've been Geocaching.

| | | Re: Geocache puzzle help I think it's a logic puzzle/problem rather than a pure mathematical problem. It needs a bit of lateral thinking and trial and error with codes, ciphers, substitutions, I think. I'd love to have a better look at it but it needs one thing I don't have right now, time.

... | I just found this thread, thought it was interesting and got lucky. I somehow noticed that (eg) 18:24 is the way that bible passages are numbered.
The first book of the bible is Genesis, so 1|18:24 is Genesis 18:24. In the King James version of the bible, this passage includes the number 50.
2|2:2 = Exodus 2:2, which includes the number 3.
6:2|23 = Joshua 2:23, which includes number 2.
I'm not in any way religious, so had to use the internet to gather this info.
I used Books of the Bible - King James Version for a book list, and BibleGateway.com: A searchable online Bible in over 100 versions and 50 languages. to find passages.
The first link can be also used to navigate through to the relevant chapter and passage.
I haven't checked any more, but I'm pretty confident.
Jerry

You'd be be good at the 'Tim Tang Test', lots of online puzzles like this one. (but you should only really start it if you can afford the time - it has a tendancy to take over one's life!) |
