Unfortunately _all_ animals, protected, endangered or otherwise, are candidates for those that like killing!
I believe elephants are protected in some areas, but not in others. It's possible that in the above Youtube video that the animal was killed humanely by a high powered rifle during a routine cull.

A high velocity round, though only the diameter of a pencil, will leave a hole in earth that you can get your arm in, owing to the explosive effect of the shock wave.

Bullets do not kill cleanly and humanely. They do impose a huge shock wave through tissue but in no way is that guaranteed to kill - quickly or even slowly. Many humans, who are much frailer than large game animals, are shot with bullets every day all over the planet and survive - as do many large game animals - although most survive and suffer with horrific disabilities from the said shock wave.
As to a bullet creating a hole the size of your arm i really do realise that Jim doesn't have a clue as to what he's talking about when he says this. I have shot some serious guns in my life and not one bullet i have seen has created a hole the size of my arm - and i certainly don't have large arms.
As to elephants, they need to be culled to keep their numbers down just like lots of animals do. And yes, people do kill them with bows and arrows as well as guns.

What's the deal with Obsidian Scalpels?
Very interesting stuff. Points to note...
Extremely sharp, however, extremely fragile.
Only suggested for use by manufacturers on very soft tissues.
Not approved for use on humans by the medical authorities, doctors who are using them seem to be doing so without approval.
