Since that day I feel I have reached my goal and my hearts not in it anymore. That's why I have moved onto wildlife as my main hobby. Seen some fantastic things during my fishing sessions though, it's half the enjoyment of the sport. | Im a mad keen pike angler and pike fishing is what i've recently started to concentrate on. Used to match fish and things when i was younger. Its shame you cant disclose where that pike water is in Scotland, it sounds like a dream place, i'd be up there is a shot. That 41lber is a awesome catch im in awe. What technique were use using when you caught those fish? I try all sorts of methods and have im just getting into fly fishing for pike. Still looking to catch my first 20lb, i can catch jack pike all day long but its frustrating. |

| | Re: Pike anglers Hi yorkieuk, i was wondering if you have zander up in your area, they are brilliant prey, I know that match people do not like them but they are a fish that feeds well in low light conditions even when it is raining overcast etc, i have never liked live bait but small dead roach under the right float goes well, but my favorite is lures in deep holes on the Avon near Stratford Warwick's, you do of course lose a few lures in the roots deep down always the good ones, as i have said in another thread here i have not been due to snakes for some time, aland. |

| | | Re: Pike anglers Hi aland, unfortunately from an angling view we dont have any up near me. Im not sure how far up the country they have spread and think there still restricted to a few areas. Its a shame really because i would love to catch one. Ive lost many a lure fishing for pike and as you say its always the best ones, and i find live baiting often works a treat. A phobia of snakes is stopping you fishing? oh dear you'll have to bite the bullet and go for it one day. |

| | | Re: Pike anglers Large mepps gold, bronze or silver with red fluff on them are in my eyes the best pike lures, Hi-lo's (plugs) are worth a go too, Red/white are good colours. Remember in general lures will catch smaller fish, the larger more lazy fish like deadbait |

What deadbait would you recommend? |

| | | Re: Pike anglers Deadbait is an interesting one as some work in some lakes others in other lakes, for example Mackerel, sardines (oily salwater fish) are best used in winter I find when pike are less active and you need a bait with a higher appeal (however they dont seem to work in all lakes). Roach, rudd (any native freshwaterfish) will work anywhere and are best to start with as you know these will form part of the pikes natural diet. Lamprey and eel are both great baits too but in my experience only work in certain lakes, but are great in rivers. When deadbaiting I use a sliderfloat above the weight this means there is less chance of deephooking the pike as the bite indication is more clear. |

| | | Re: Pike anglers A 10-15lb is best for eating too. Smaller is crude and too large coarse. they make fantastic bbq fillets dipped in flour and breadcrumbs. 2 inch thick 3 mins a side gently grilled with a little salt and pepper and then some basil chopped over them. Wonderful.
Don't do what my ol' mate Pete did in '85, brought one home priested, too big for fridge so kept it fresh in bath of cold water, 8 month pregnant wife gets up to use toilet, turns light on, fish shoots up out of water, fish not dead, wife nearly so from shock, baby born two hours later. Did not amuse wife I can tell you, not in the slightest, very sour wife for many, many weeks, married men you know exactly what I mean!

So if anyone wants to drop of a fish at my place he/she is guaranteed a damned good feed. |

Rich | They tend to like lures that look like small pike. They are very cannabilistic. I prefer dead bait myself - sprats are good. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
