flint???

dear all i have the family coming round soon and want to do a flint knapping demonstration so im in need of some large flint spalls.can anyone help me out? many thanks alex

Down here in the South East of Kent there is nothing but flint ,it's on the walls of houses , garden walls and lies about all over the place,on the cliffs,
Take a trip to the garden of england and fill your boot, wish you well with the flint knaping hope you have some nice thick leather to strike into,

Where chalk or limestone occurs across the UK you can find flint . However it is localised and variable in quality for working....

If you cant find any tamarack stock it. They are a company that do outward bound courses and sell clothing boots etc. Just north of Preston

If you cant find flint you could always knap an arrowhead from a glass bottle (the base or a green wine bottle or something), just a thought.

Welcome to WAB

Whereabouts in the country are you, because like Duncan, we have tons of flint down here on the South Downs? Eastbourne area is full of it and also Surrey (North Downs). Failing that, Northern France! I have seen loads of it there too (maybe an pre-xmas shopping trip? )

Have you done this sort of thing before? I see you are also looking for deer antlers. Those come up on eBay regularly, if you are in a hurry. Knowing eBay, they may well have flint stone as well - if you want to do a search!

_The_ place for flint is Brandon in Suffolk. Grimes Graves in Brandon are extensive stone age flint mines where they dug down up to 40ft to get at the special 'tabular' flint that was the best quality. Flint tools from this area have been found all over Europe. Flint knapping is still carried out in Brandon, mainly for gun flints.

If you do not have an area where you know that the land owner will be happy with your collecting from the surface - ploughed field - quarry waste - cliff wash - then I suggest you contact Prehistoric Experiences for advice of locating a supply.
