| | | Hare Coursing Hi,
Late on Sunday afternoon I noticed a van pull up alongside the fields at the rear of my garden about half kilometre away, 4 adults and a child then got out with 2 Greyhounds. They then released the Greyhounds who started to chase several Hares that were present.
I made a phone call to the Police and within 5 minutes 2 Police vehicles arrived (I guess someone else also phoned).
Fortunately the dogs didnt catch anything and I dont know what happened to the people as they were with the police for around 10 minutes and then all drove off.
Has anyone else seen this happening?
Paul

I expect they just got 'told off'! They'll no doubt just move to another field/area and do it again - numbskulls...
Did you get the registration of the van Paul? Might be worth keeping your eyes peeled for it if you did.

Unfortunately I see this quite often around here on the Downs, but the local farmers have a good network and let the Police know pretty quickly. Also have have been advised by the Police not to approach these people as they can get pretty violent.

Paul | Good advice methinks! I'd steer well clear unless you want to be looking down the barrel of a shot gun
I just can't get the mentality of people like this... why can't they just exercise their dogs like everyone else and leave the hares alone!?!

| | | Re: Hare Coursing It happens a lot in this area too. I think a good lurcher is a bit of a status symbol in the travelling community. They often leave that good lurcher behind though if they get disturbed by the police.

| | | Re: Hare Coursing How awful, I'd have done the same thing and phoned the police. You do have to be careful though, I agree, these people can be dangerous. Incidentally, does anyone know where the law stands on Hare coursing ?? Just for my own record. |

| | | Re: Hare Coursing I guess its a gypsey/ traveller tradition so they dont see it as "mindless"...i doubt the van would be legally registered either so the reg wont be much cop ( although i guess they would have been nicked in this instance so maybe it was legit).
Do they take the hares once caught to eat?...not sure how it works but i guess its just a way of getting a free meal for themselves if that is the case?...not that i agree with it at all. Or is it another betting ring...whos dog catches it first kind of thing?
Not that i like ANY dogs but why oh why would people choose a lurcher?...my non gypsey law degree friend has 2 and they are like 2 walking brillo pipe cleaners and certainly not cuddly...unless you slept with a straw filled scarecrow instead of a teddy bear as a child?

Just for my own record. | Its definately not legal...the Isle of Sheppey has police signs all over warning about the activity and numbers to call.
