I think you may find that Hare coursing is undertaken by folk from a wide range of society so pre-conceptions like this are of little use to anyone when trying to identify the perpetrators.
The best and prescribed actions to take if you witness illegal Hare coursing are to contact the police and report the incident then take vehicle details and descriptions if possible from a safe distance, and most imoportantly DO NOT approach them for any reason. |

Sorry...but where i live its definately a traveller past time. I didnt know other people did it too so i stand corrected. And also if you read the entire thread im not the only one who was implying it was these sort of people taking part. i actually know a lot of travellers and some of their ways and traditions intrigue me. They are probably more "countrymen" and women and more wise to our free food in the hedgerows, the seasons, wild flowers and traditions than most people on this entire forum.

| | | Re: Hare Coursing just to point out that regardless of the legalities of hunting with dogs - generaly you can flush but not kill with hounds so hare coursing would qualify if the hare was not caught - the reason that hare coursing is illegal is that in lots of cases they are trespassing on the land and for any hunting activity to be legal you need landowner permision.
i agree with what fourwings says about not generalising but in dans defence coursing is pretty much synonymous with the traveller comunity (though less with the romany gypsy than with the irish comunity), and i doubt whether most of them would find this to be offensive or predjudiced as most travellers i have met ( and i my last job i met a lot) would have been the first to admit they went coursing - as ann says a good longdog is a status symbol in the coursing world and approached in the right way lots of travellers are only too happy to show theirs off
tho as fourwings says there are coursers from all walks of life, and not every courser is a criminal as you do get legally organised meets - particularly in eire.

| | | Re: Hare Coursing Dont agree with this so called sport what so ever..and find it upsetting that children are taking part in this distasteful pastime.
Yet we are interested through television watching a pack of Bigs Cats or hunting dogs chasing down their prey . These Greyhounds - Lurchers are being used for the same thing . Unfortunately it is an artificial environment with the human factor involed that makes it unacceptable and unnecessary.
I purchased my Greyhound from the RSPCA two yrs ago she had been used for racing and then got into the wrong hands and then used for Hare Coursing ..The conditions that these dogs are kept in are unacceptable and this was the reason why she was taken into the RSPCA.. She is now in good health and has become a happy member of my family ..getting on with my kids and my two cats..But due to this conditioning she went through unfortunately if allowed she will chase anything. So once again its the human factor that is responsible for certain behavior in some of our dogs today..
