| | | Glorious Day Birding in the Outer Hebrides Wow what a lovely day, got some pretty pictures, not unusual birds but in beautiful surroundings, I hope you agree.
First off around the headland from where I live was a host of purple sandpipers, between 50 and 100. Here is a picture with the sandpipers paying homage to the king of the castle an Oyster Catcher (with his turnstone knights) and then one of a purple sandpiper on its on:
Then around the headland was a rock pipit sunning himself (I think)
On the way home I couldn't resist this starling against the stunning blue of the sky, sitting on the coastal protection wall.
Went out this afternoon to South Uist near the MOD rocket range beaches, first saw a flock of greylags swimming in the blue of the loch.
Went down onto the beaches, is was very difficult to capture the birds as there were quite a few oyster catchers amongst them who tend to be nervous and disturb the other flocks but....a first for me flocks of bar tailed godwits....so WAB have told me:
On the way back was a redshank, I had to post this as the reflection makes the bird seem very very tall, it confused me at first
And last but not least, seen everywhere down south but not so plentiful here a beautiful black headed gull in summer plummage.
I hope you enjoyed my pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them. Its now gone twelve I have been scottish dancing for 4 hours and I have to be up at 6 to catch the ferry to Stornoway....make hay while the sun shines.
Take Care

| | | Re: Glorious Day Birding in the Outer Hebrides You and your Purple sands.
I never get to see them down here. I know where they are but when they see me coming they disappear quickly.
Excellent set of images Debs. It's nice to see your area bathed in sunshine for a change.

John | Have you been frightening them with your legs again, its too early for the shorts to come out
I am sorry to say the purple sandpipers seem very tame around here and you can creep up to them quite easierly. They remain behind after I have scared the oyster catchers and turnstones away...and no I walk fully clothed amongst the midges

Thanks for that Debs. Makes me feel good to know that the Purple Sands are comfortable with your prescence. If I came up I would soon change that.
