| | | Re: a wren's nest ? Chaffinch DH, most of them were normally in a small tree, but every now and again I would find the odd one in a hedge. That nest was about 35 feet up. There are still a lot of goldfinch here but bullfinch have all but gone, when they cut down the orchard to make way for housing, most of them went too. I don't like to think so long back, make me feel very old |

| | | Re: a wren's nest ? Yes it would be unusual to see goldfinch low down in a hedge. Shame about the bullfinch. Its amazing to see the changes in finch populations, between species. |

| | | Re: a wren's nest ? I would say that neither the river nest nor the one I saw yesterday were chaffinch. Neither had that quantity of exterior moss and leaves (though I suppose both could have lost the softer bits of the nest. I'd say they were both smaller too).
Goldfinch - I've just looked those up online. Both nests I saw were pretty shallow, but goldfinch could certainly be a candidate.
Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of the one I saw yesterday, but it was the same size and shape and made primarily of small twigs. Apart from the completely different position, I would have said they were from the same bird - but I've never studied any nests before.

C | hello lemars id be very surprised if the nest in your photo is that of a goldfinch.its way to low down for one, they tend to nest a lot higher .they are also a lot more compact. and deeper in the cup than the one in your photo. rossy. |

| | | Re: a wren's nest ? Im not sure if there is some confusion, the nest described by lemars was what I suggested could be a goldfinch. The one in the photo is most definitely not, as has already been discussed. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
