Kestral v Magpie

Just arrived at startops resi tring this afternoon, when i pointed out a kestral ,flying low ,just over where we parked up.Nothing unusual....stuff out of car and ready for a snow bunyting hunt , when we observed the same kestral , flying out of the trees and attacking a magpie , which was on the ground with another one.The kestral got a hold on its back but not enough, the kestral on the floor with the magpie having a faceoff albeit for a few seconds, the kestral then flew off into a nearby tree....strange behaviour or a kestral wanting the magpies of his turf.?
