| | | Re: What to do with Sunflower Hearts? I had the same idea and bought a big bag of sunflower hearts. I replaced the feeder that had whole sunflowers, and replaced it with one just containing sunflower hearts - and came back from work to find the whole lot dumped on the ground! I dont know whether the birds had just gone mad, or whether they didnt like the hearts. But the mice under the feeders were having a whale of a time...
I now mix the sunflower hearts in with generic bird food, raisins, and mealworms. That mixture goes like crazy.
Though as Kayleigh says, now that the weather is turning warmer, my spoilt little garden visitors are starting to turn their beaks up at my offerings! |

| | | Re: What to do with Sunflower Hearts? It's difficult to tell if the experiment was a success or not- my squirrel-proof, starling-stopper cage arrived this afternoon (great fun attempting to assemble ) and I moved the seed tray into that... I had a pleasant half hour or so watching the starlings go 'round and 'round, perplexed and trying to figure out how to get in. The tits and robin love it.
Since the starlings' marauding seems to have been curtailed for the time being, there was food left on the tray today, and not just the sunflower hearts. I did notice that the sparrows have started feeding from the tube seed feeder I'd also put the hearts in- so it looks like everyone was right, and I just needed to give them more time to become accustomed to the new feed. |

This is a good thread for me as I am just starting out and recently bought sunflower hearts this weekend and they have not been touched in my feeder, I have starlings and they seem to be going mad for my fat balls and a mixed seed and apple I put on a tray but my hearts and finch mix is untouched wee monkeys. Well I will stick with it and see what comes this week.
