| | | Poorly Wood Pigeon advice/help needed please Hi All
Pigeon found in garden today, hardly moving just pecking around in some seed i had left out, just sat there like they do when cold and puffed up, didn't really bother when i got near to it, i have a dog so put the pigeon in a box as it was also getting dark and wanted it safe, it did attempt to fly short distances a couple of times to avoid being caught but mostly tried to walk and hide under bushes, no actual fight when i caught it, it is moving in the box more than it was to start with and occasionally making noises that i can only describe as snoring lol
I have tried a local wildlife hospital and they want me to take it to them which i cannot do and it is quite far away, the nearest sanctuary seems to have closed down
I am happy to try and help the pigeon myself, it has been awhile since i have had any wildlife to take care of so want to make sure i am doing things correctly hence joining here looking for advice and help
will it be ok over night without food or water or should i attempt to give it some? I don't want to distress it or anything, i have feeding syringes, but what do you give them? i do have bird seed and meal worms, but what about fluids?
I really would appreciate any help or advice anyone could offer
Thanks |

Thanks | bless you for trying your best to help. I hope the bird survives the night, certainly a better chance now you have taken it out of the freezing night..
I'm no expert but I've looked after a few birdies in my time, and I generally give them peace, water and seed. (I was told uncooked rice would do fine once when I was a student (several decades ago) and unexpectedly had a pigeon guest.. and it was!) |

| | | Re: Poorly Wood Pigeon advice/help needed please Hi and thank you just reading the link that was left and it does suggest they need fluids, this is the part i am concerned about, do i use the syringe to make it take water? if i put some in the box its bound to end up everywhere, i just don't want to stress the pigeon out, it is moving around so is still with us
would i be better to change the box over to a pet carrier? i really don't know what to do for the best. i don't want to kill it with kindness lol
It is mostly quiet in the room it is in at the moment but there is not many places it can go undisturbed |

| | | Re: Poorly Wood Pigeon advice/help needed please as I understand it, an adult pigeon can drink water by sucking as if up a straw from its beak.. no need to syringe it. I never did, and have had some fly aways.. |

| | | Re: Poorly Wood Pigeon advice/help needed please after reading about how they become dehydrated i decided to give it a go, he is definitely livelier than he was, not sure how much water he had, think i ended up with more on me, but just syringed on the end of his beak (as read to do) and i think he did take some of it then he got far to lively and i put him back hahaa *so brave* lol |
