| | | Does any food attact Lesser spotted WP Hi folks,
This may be a old question, but I think I've seen an LSW hanging around our garden on a few occasions now.
Does anyone know of any food that might entice them out for a clearer view?
Cheers

To tell if it's a LSW not a GSW simply first note the big size difference, LSW's are only a bit bigger than a sparrow. Then no large oval patches on the back If you get a good enough view. Size is the best indicator!
Good luck anyway, and keep us posted.

Just dont leave it to fester! and in they come.

The LS Woodpecker is not as common, so if it does visit, I'd love to see a photo!
I've yet to see one & it would be a life tick for me when I do.
Good luck!

Jim | When you say "mesh feeder" I hope you mean a wire mesh feeder and not a nylon one. Nylon mesh feeders are very dangerous to birds as they can easily catch their claws in the mesh and being unable to get free seriously injured themselves and in many cases die. Personally I think nylon mesh feeders should be banned.
Anyway, I'm envious as I have never had a Lesser Spotted WP in my garden. I do have a female Greater Spotted WP frequently visiting my garden feeding on the fat cake and balls I put out.

| | | Re: Does any food attact Lesser spotted WP Of course i meant wire mesh and not nylon, sorry Harold. Dont use any nylon mesh in my garden Would hate to find a bird tangled in something made to encourage/help the little fella.
I too am envious as I haven't had by of the three woodpeckers in my garden. I see them all the time at my local nature reserve and they regularly feed on suet and peanuts, they have all 3 kinds of WP aswell at the moment!

| | | Re: Does any food attact Lesser spotted WP You'd be very lucky to get a visit in my opinion but nothing to stop you trying. I'm lucky to have GSW most days and then last year...this little guy was about for a few weeks..
Note he's eating fat treats. I hang mine on an old "planted" dead tree.
Good luck!
