| | | Re: Ring-necked Parakeets - how exactly did they get here? I've been trying to read more about it. And although I can't find an answer to my original question, I find it interesting to note that sub-populations in NW England died out in the late 80s and early 90s. This might have been due to "inbreeding and the absence of outside recruitment". So I wonder if the failure to establish populations in the SE until the 1970s, although records of this species breeding date back from 1855 (Northrepps Hall, Norfolk), could be down to a similar reason.
Thanks Dave.

| | | Re: Ring-necked Parakeets - how exactly did they get here? Not a lot of people know this but ... ... Swallows and Amazons was originally going to be called Parakeets and Amazons and they started filming on the Norfolk Broads.
They released 20 males and 20 females but getting towards the end of filming the producer changed his mind and decided to call it Swallows and Amazons and the rest is history.
I know you're not gonna believe me, but am I bothered ?

Neil. | I'm sure Arthur Ransome would be surprised at that - as he wrote the source book in 1930. Plus it's set in the Lake District, and it might look a bit odd on the Broads! |

Parakeets and Amazons was just my light hearted twist on how they could have had a small population in Norfolk although I suppose Northrepps Hall is nowhere near the Broads.
