| | | Tawny Owl A bit late for anyone to be helping me out here, but I've just picked up a Tawny Owl off the road. Just sat there. Not sure if its been hit or just got too cold to go on, but breathing sounds a bit mucusy. At mo wrapped up in a fleecy blanket in care. Guess I'll keep it warm room in a box overnight and blanketed over and see what occurs in the morn. Any advice appreciated |

| | | Re: Tawny Owl Yeah my only Immediate advice would be keep it warm but not too warm, maybe fresh water. Not sure have never cared for an owl, just other smaller birds. Maybe ring either your local 24hr vet. If it perks up though I would release it at night in the area I found it.
I am sure someone with some decent advice will reply though first thing in the morning!
Good luck

| | | Re: Tawny Owl Tawny is still alive and upright after a night in a c/board box in a warmed room. It just sits there. Doesn't respond to my stroking its head. I pooped to the local butchers for a few small offcuts and at the local vets who have given me contact for local animal rescue sanctuary/hospital at East Winch. Still not sure if it got hit or just suffered from extreme cold and lack of food. It does feel quite lightweight. |

| | | Re: Tawny Owl I might be wrong, (and if I am hopefully someone will correct me!) but I either read somewhere or was told that if it will take food, a good easy-to-digest mixture for an ill or injured BoP is room-temp tinned dog food with a raw egg yolk mashed in.
Good luck with it- and keep us posted! |

| | | Re: Tawny Owl Update on Tawny is that I have taken him/she/it to East Winch animal sanctuary. Initial prognosis shows that the bird is still using its talons to grip with and its weight is not of concern. I didn't think I was particularly qualified to care for it and having read on an injured owl site that if the bird is easily picked up and appears 'tame', then it is obviously in serious trouble as it can no longer fend for itself. The one worry is that if it has taken a knock and knocked it senseless, then its eyesight may be buggered and that will be that - or it could be simply a matter of a bit of concussion. Hopefully they can bring it back with a bit of TLC and the right injections to perk it up. All the time I had it - and I had it perched on the box in a gloomy dining room this morning for a bit - it not once opened its eyes or acknowledged the bits of mince I wafted under it's snoz. Even feeling its breast bone didn't stir it, just sat there in a doze as if hibernating, which makes me wonder if it had gone into shut down mode with the very cold weather and lack of food scource. Only this arvo I found a young Thrush keeled over on the back lawn. (It wasn't there this morning) and it was very light weight and bony, poor xexexexexexe! Thanks for all your inputs and concerns. Will keep y'awl posted. |

| | | Re: Tawny Owl Reckon you've done well there. Hope the animal sanctuary can help it, although it doesn't sound good.
And yes, please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Bryan

| | | Re: Tawny Owl I have just come off the phone with the animal sanctuary. It would appear Tawny has sustained some sort of impact. It has a cracked beak and also has some haemorraging of the eyes. At present the vet's not inclined to put it down and thinks there's a poss that these injuries can heal, but will take another week/ten days. So fingers X'd |

Many thanks for the update.
