Hungry Sparrowhawk

At the weekend, our family were watching in amazement out of our dining room window at a sparrowhawk trying to perch on a pyracanthus hedge, along our fence, trying to get to the sparrows hiding there. It kept thrusting its head into the hedge and we could hear the sparrows alarm (which was quite sad) but it was so amazing to see the sparrowhawk so close to the house and it was trying in vain to get the birds. In the end it gave up and flew off.

I always thought that they caught the birds in flight, at least this is all I have ever seen on TV programmes!

Common behaviour, the ones at my hide catch nearly half there meals in the thicket.

It was especially great to see this so close to the window, we felt quite privileged, although mixed emotions of being relieved for the sparrows but sad that the sparrowhawk went hungry!
