Looking through my old pictures I found this one which I think I took last year, the nest in the picture was about 40 feet up a tree and contained some huge branches, over 6 feet long. the largest bird I have seen in the area (near Guildford, Surrey) was a buzzard, I was wondering if this could have been its nest, if not, can anyone suggest anything that would make a nest of such large branches? I would have thought they would have been too big for a buzzard to carry, they must have weighed a few pounds each at least.

Could easily be a Heron. Pretty typical of the ones I see at our local Heronry. |

Thanks for the quick replies , I hadnt even considered herons, the big branches looked like they would have needed something very substantial to carry them, and I have seen herons in the area, looks like the puzzle has been solved.

Wow!!  Those are big branches, wouldn't be to happy to have one of those drop out of the sky as your strolling care free and dandy  lol .. they mest be really strong, not only to carry them but to maneuver them into place!  |

I would love to have been able to get photos of the heron or whatever it was flying along with those branches.
