| | | Finally a Kingfisher In May last year I invited my brother to join me for a day to see Cuckoo and Kingfisher among other things.
We saw several cuckoos but no sign of a kingfisher
It has taken me countless trips to innumerable locations since then to "find" an unreported Kingfisher for myself.
Well yesterday, I trudged through thick snow on a regular walk following a mostly - frozen stretch of water and snuck up on this beauty...
I nearly didn't take the camera |

| | | Re: Finally a Kingfisher Well done.
I remember my first close encounter too. I'd seen them flying past at high speed loads of times so I constructed a perch and stuck it in the water in front of the hide.
About 4 weeks went by without success but then it finally it happened.
Less than 15 feet away he sat there for several minutes and I got lots of decent images. I'll never forget that day!
I'm yet to see a Cuckoo though...

| | | Re: Finally a Kingfisher Sometimes they can surprise you. I was in the field with students, crossing a bridge when suddenly not only did a kingfisher head straight for us all, it suddenly realised that it couldn't do a low level flight to get around us, it went over us at a couple of feet above our heads. We got great views of it, even though it was very quick.

| | | Re: Finally a Kingfisher Thanks Dave, wish Cordaline luck (shame she's so far from me, it's great to share the excitement with like minded people).
Billy I'm going to try a few strategically planted sticks, there's dykes on the marshes where it's teeming with small fish (and no people), hopefully it will keep it here for a bit longer
WW - I know just what you mean, it flew from further inland, I only recognised it as it flew past, never seen them in this area before, guess it's here for the winter - and maybe been here a while.
My challenge now is to get a photo while it's fishing |

| | | Re: Finally a Kingfisher Mike I am so lucky, I have a fantastic array of differing environments within easy reach, my park walk on Monday afternoon produced GS and G Woodpeckers, Jays, Redwings, Finches and a nice Goldcrest... |
