| | | Weird wren behaviour? I was very excited this evening to see a wren hopping around outside one of the windows - first in the garden this year. But then I noticed something odd - it kept flying and hopping along the window ledge, and even flew into the glass on the living room window, as though it was trying to get inside. It then flew onto the roof, but a few minutes later was back, doing the same thing.
It occurred to me that this morning I had shut the window to the garage (which is not used as a garage, but rather as a repository for the lawn mower, bikes, skis, and all kinds of other stuff). Do you think it possible that this little chap has been using the garage to roost in? I don't go in there every day, and up until now, when it has suddenly got so much colder, I had the little window open. I just decided to close it today to protect my overwintering plants from frost.
I opened the window again, of course, but by this time it was nearly dark and I didn't see the wren again. I have had birds nest in the garage before, and they use the little window to get in and out.
Do you think it possible / likely that this wren was trying to get in to the garage to roost? |

| | | Re: Weird wren behaviour? It could be what you said or its getting territorial and saw its reflection in the glass they are getting ready to breed and get aggressive against other males.
Just a thought.. |

| | | Re: Weird wren behaviour? Ah, that's a good point Elaine... I'll leave the window open for now and will have a look tomorrow to see if I can spot any 'evidence' that we've had a visitor in the garage or not! |

| | | Re: Weird wren behaviour? Woo hoo - I have a resident wren!!!
Went into the garage first thing this morning to have a look - and there he was, on the top of a set of shelves, sitting very quietly...
I wanted to get a photo but also didnt want to disturb him / her.
So the garage window will have to stay open now, and the geraniums and fuchias will just have to take their chance.
I am THRILLED!!! |

| | | Re: Weird wren behaviour? Great news Karen, a wonderful little bird and a great success so early in the year.
Here's hoping it'll nest up and breed in there for you. |

| | | Re: Weird wren behaviour? Great little birds and can be surprisingly aggressive for their size, I was talking with a friend near an ivy covered wall and a wren appeared on a gate nearby and started making a racket and jumping up and down, then it flew over and pecked my friend on the back of the head. He said *did you see the size of that? Must have been at least an eagle!*

Hi Karen,
the plants should be fine as the frost will not get at them in the garage even with the window open the cold doesn't hurt plants like geraniums they are tough.
Fingers crossed you will have little wrens everywhere sometime soon.. |
