| | | what a trip to london I had to go up to london yesterday and i decided to keep an eye out for certain species e.g Hen Harrier and Osprey but i knew how unlikely it was to see them. But i managed 3 new species yesterday . As we entered wiltshire a pair of corn buntings were flying over the road (a new species). Then as we were crossing salisbury plain a red legged partridge decided to run in front of the car but luckily dived back into the verge (another first). Then the highlight. As we approached stonehenge i noticed a bird of too my left. It was a gorgeous male HEN HARRIER !!!!! . I couldnt believe my luck. I saw his dove grey body and dark black wing tips just as they dissapeared over the brow of the hill. I am soooo happy. Hen Harrier was a species i have wanted to see for a long time and now i have managed it . |

| | | Re: what a trip to london Well done Vinny sounds like a great trip,
Corn Bunting is one I've still not managed to see and I really want to see one! Male Hen Harriers are really beautiful birds, before this winter I'd only seen females, which are still very nice, but then I saw a male and thought it was amazing! Also, Red-Legged Partridges are very nice little birds as well, I hardly ever see them and it would be nice to see them a bit more!
Well done,

before can you be sure of the ID from a car ? I've had one shown
to me (actually several at the same time), but they seemed
just like the larger end of LBJs and I would struggle to be sure
next time even with a good showing.
I've read about the jizz of the flight ("In flight, over short distances
often dangles its legs and the flight appears fluttering") but even
after seeing them I didn't "get" that
I'd be interested to hear what the expert birders feel, as I
am certainly not one of those. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
