| | | "Anting" woodpecker? A neighbour recently watched a great spotted woodpecker for about an hour pecking (not drumming) carefully in a hole in the upper part of a wooden telephone post. It then seemed to wipe the contents into its plumage, both on the body and the, sometimes outstretched, wings. At no time did it eat anything out of the hole. Could there have been ants so high up and could the woodpecker have been "anting"? Do great spotted woodpeckers "ant"? |

| | | Re: "Anting" woodpecker? Maybe it was making a hole ready for the breeding season.. adapting could be the name of the game . Not sure about the ants maybe the the other section on the forum could help build a picture if ants could have been there.
