Strange bird... any idea what it is?

Hello,

I've attached a photo of a strange bird of a sort I've never seen in the wild in Britain before...

I'm assuming it's perhaps an escaped pet bird?

Unfortunately, the photo isn't of a great quality as by the time I'd got the camera it had moved but hopefully it should be sufficient for some wise soul to tell me what it is?

Yes indeed a green woodpecker..we have one that occasionally turns up in the garden and have managed to get a photo of it-but try getting a photo when its up a tree...they play ring o'roses with you lol!

Yes Green Woodpecker, quite a common bird, they particularly like wide open spaces and big gardens

Hello Tommy,
I've often seen them in gardens (not mine unfortunately), they like to feed on ants among other things - so keep an eye out you will probably see it again, beautiful birds aren't they

great visitor tom your garden! Try hanging peanut feeders out, too, and you may well attract the 'Great Spotted' variety of Woodpecker.

also fat cake or a log feeder.. i have them and the great spotty loves it..

Green woodpeckers are pretty elusive so you did well to get a picture, but you will often hear their loud laughing call, also known as a 'yaffle'. We always have them around on the farm as we have meadow ants in some of our grassfields, and I often see them in flight and hear them but haven't managed a picture yet.
