| | | How to attract Red Kites? I have the wonderful pleasure of a pair of Red Kites circling over my house most days!
I was wondering if there was a way of attracting them, safely, in to my garden?
It would be just amazing to have the priviledge of such visitors!
Please respect the fact that I am asking this as a serious question, so can you refrain from any silly responses!
Many thanks,
Vicki.

The best way would be to supply them with food, especially smaller chunks of carrion or meat.
You need to be careful that you are not putting them at risk from cats, dogs, windows etc. |

| | | Re: How to attract Red Kites? If you have a fairly big area of open grass/lawn then if you are serious about feeding them then I would buy some uncooked beef and lie it out in the centre of the lawn and if they see it (they probably will) they will swoop down and take it on the wing.
That's my advice, I have never fed them myself as I ent lucky enough to have them around my area in worcs, but everytime I have seen people feeding them that is how they did it (gigrin farm, gardens, on TV etc)
And make sure they can't see you when you do it, they are quite shy!

"If you feed sections of large carcasses or butchers offcuts, make sure that you cover the meat with a bonemeal supplement. This will provide the calcium that red kites need for healthy bone growth."
All sites that describe kite feeding emphasise the need for a balanced diet, which usually includes fur/feather and bone.

| | | Re: How to attract Red Kites? I should have mentioned that big birds do big 'do-dos'!
Locals in Watlington where they are common regard them as a mixed blessing, owing to the mess they make on patios, windows and cars!

| | | Re: How to attract Red Kites? I see them every time I am working on trains going to Reading, all around where you are Vicki, I saw 7 at Earley a few weeks ago, and they fly very low around the houses, great seeing them, especially as I hadnt ever seen any til last year, they seem to be doing very well in your area. Lucky you, look forward to the pictures when you get them to feed in your garden.

| | | Re: How to attract Red Kites? Vicki, it was once suggested to me that the way to attract them is to use quite a large chicken that they can't fly off with. So they have to keep coming back to it. A cheap Tesco value chicken would do I guess.
Good luck and please tell us how you get on.
Cheers,
Bryan
