I'll maybe end up looking stupid - but I saw this bird in the garden this morning and can't identify it in any of my books.
I've attached a photo - sorry about the quality but it was at 1600asa and the top end of my zoom lens - through a window! The bird is about the size of a large Chaffinch. Would appreciate any help - thanks  |

Have a look at leucistic Chaffinch. I can't tell from your photo, but maybe you could have a look at some images and see if this fits.

Thanks Deb and Jason - yeah that seems to make sense - although I'd never have come up with it! Certainly a new one on me. I thought it was a lovely fawn or buff colour, it didn't seem to keen on coming near the feeders whilst other birds were there.

Definitely a Chaffinch (probably a female based on the colouring remaining, but it is possibly that a leucistic male could be left with buff tones.
This photo shows the bill better, which helps with the ID:

Wow! Thanks for all the comments. My first reaction was Chaffinch from it's general behaviour - but then I'm not as knowledgeable as all you folk! As I said originally - sorry about the quality of the photos. For reference they were taken with a Canon Eos600d, 70-300is Canon lens at 300mm setting, 1600asa hand held at 1/30th f5.6 (through the kitchen window!) | | |
