| | | an gbb gulls kill herring gulls and lbb gulls? do they ever kill adults of the other species? i see gbb gulls hanging out in mixed flocks but i have been told they kill newly fledged chicks and not even both parents attacking a single GBB gull can stop it, i wonder can a GBB gull kill an adult herring gull also if it got a good hold on it ? does it happen? |

| | | Re: an gbb gulls kill herring gulls and lbb gulls? All gulls predate nests, and this is often quite common in colonies where species like herring gull will predate other nests of the same species. It is quite hard to determine whether GBB's have actually killed their prey or are feeding on carrion, unless you actually see it happen (which has limited the number of successful studies on this). They are capable of killing adult gulls (including other GBB's) and predate other seabirds upto about the size of a cormorant. However they do tend to target weak birds and birds which are injured. I witnessed one kill a razorbill captured in a fishermans net, these gulls tend to kill prey by repeatedly stabbing the bill into the head of the victim. |

| | | Re: an gbb gulls kill herring gulls and lbb gulls? I have seen bbg kill a number of different things, what springs to mind is the predation of a common gull nest site on a daily "fly past" I have seen them on a number of occasions kill and eat young Sand Martins which had got too near the mouth of their burrow, fallen out to be scooped up by the bbg, who incidently knew when the Sandmartins were near the flying stage and stand on the riverbank waiting to pounce., I have also seen them twice killing and carrying off baby rabbits. As was said earlier all gulls predate especially things like young Ducks,Coots, Moorhens and other youngsters of a few days old | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
