My 'Peterson, Mountfort and Hollom - A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe', makes no mention of 'bonxie' in the great skua entry.
Regional and local names are confusing for those that don't live in the area in which they originate. 'Bonxie' is a Shetland name, and you don't get more regional than that! I'm sure that if a Scot on the forum started banging on about 'partens', they would soon get picked up! Likewise a Cornish person referring to 'emmets'.

| | | Re: bonxies vs bops? I was working in Shetland where Ifirst saw a Bonxie,at least that is what the local people called them, infact they were still Bonxies until I got home on the mainland, weeks later to learn that in fact they were Great Skuas.
Incidently a Parten is an edible crab,at least it is in Aberdeenshire.
Apologies again for going off in a different subject | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
